At the beginning of 2010, I was privileged to take a Foreign Correspondence class through Ohio University’s E.W. Scripps School of Journalism. After nearly four years of hard work in the Scripps program, I could finally enroll in my dream class. The bulk of the coursework focused on enterprising two international stories. Given my Spanish fluency, I chose Spain.
My first report covered the safety and security of Spain’s popular train system. I was naive to think that government officials would openly discuss problems with their national railway. It didn’t turn out exactly as I envisioned, but that doesn’t mean I put anything less than all of my effort into it.
My second report highlighted the country’s emerging film industry. As globalization opens our eyes to the possibilities of our distant neighbors, we can notice the rise of non-traditional industries like the art of film making in Spain. No matter what the technological advancements are, good story telling will always attract audiences.
